Grants and Funding

Planning and Programming Grants

Planning Grants

The KDOT Safe Routes to School Planning Grant provides resources to assist communities throughout the state in creating their SRTS Plans, which can both help them plan for future SRTS efforts and build community momentum around walking, biking, and rolling to school. Grant recipients receive technical assistance to develop a SRTS Plan for their community. Most applicants are school districts or local governments, and buy-in from both parties is necessary for successful implementation. A completed SRTS Plan can be used to seek additional funding for infrastructure design and construction and to support SRTS programs.

Programming Grants

The KDOT Safe Routes to School Programming Grant provides funding to implement education, encouragement, and enforcement (i.e., non-infrastructure) priorities identified in a community’s SRTS Plan. These may be programs like walking school buses, traffic safety education, or pop-up and demonstration projects.

The application cycle for P&P Grants is now open! Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on May 1, 2026.
